What is cork?

Cork - biological tissue of some plants (trees), consisting of closely spaced dead cells (bark). The cork provides the host plant with improved heat and moisture insulation and prevents the loss of valuable nutrients by living wood tissues.

Cork is one of the lightest solids (specific gravity about 0.2 n / m³). It has a rare property, which is that the volume of the material is significantly reduced under the influence of external pressure, which is almost completely restored after removal of the load. These properties, as well as low thermal and acoustic conductivity, as well as impermeability to many liquids, determine all the most important applications of this material.
